Performance of Footing Products Indoors:
Prority 1: Usability/rideability.
1) If the client cannot ride upon the arena surface, the arena has no value.
2) Using an incorrect type of sand will greatly reduce the lifespan of the arena footing,
therefore reducing its future Value to the client.
3) Since the riding surface must be Long-Lasting,
then using the correct type of sand, in the correct blend of particulate sizes, becomes the top priority.
What type of sand lasts the longest? Silica Sand is required for any long-lasting riding surface.
Any other sand type will quickly decompose into stone dust, rendering your arena unhealthy to use.
Local Source of Silica Sand: There is only one source of quality graded silica sand in the Pacific Northwest, Lane Mountain Silica.
> We have submitted samples of the "best substitute locally available" to ProEquus™ in Austria.
> ProEquus™ has replied that they may be able to use one of the "locally available sands" with a custom blend,
~ however this could not be considered a "longlasting solution,"
~ therefore none of the non-silica sands would be advised, and
~ for any client using this lower-quality "locally available non-silica or little-silica blend"
- a greatly reduced "useful lifespan" must be expected.
> There are no exceptions to the above rule.
Some product suppliers may promise their product will "prevent dust" or "maintain the correct elasiticity and pack" or other promises.
All those promises will bear no affect - once the non-silica sand components degrade into dust.
This is a law of geo-physics.
Secondary Priorities: Following priorities' may be determined by the client's wishes.
 Cushion against concussive injuries
 Traction
 Flexibility or "bounce"
 Low-maintenance
IF: the client insists upon using a low-grade, easily decomposed sand medium (or "dust in a few years"),
THEN: We may attempt to maximize the lifespan of riding arena surface - using various additives and/or components,
> which will temporarily stave off the inevitable "stone dust" degradation.
> However, NONE of those "maximization-efforts" will achieve the same long-lasting quality of:
simply using the correct sand in the first place - silica sand.
