About the finished surface options you may choose:
Indoors: Permeable backfill medium (clean sand, gravel or coarse grit/small pebbles – no fines or stone dust)
Outdoors: May be finished with clean sand, gravel, grit/pebbles; may also be backfilled with topsoil and seeded/grassed.

NOTE: Permanent installation of fine particulates of cellulose-based products (sawdust, pelletized wood dust, finely granulated bio-mass,
etc.) is not advised.
Exceptions ...
Indoor confinement areas: Wheat straw or wood shavings may be used - and are advised - where regular or daily maintenance/cleaning is performed (i.e. mucking out horse stalls etc.).
Anywhere: Please avoid using finely pulverized wood, sawdust, or bio-mass: the fines may filter down into the subsoil, clogging the subsoil's native drainage.
