PHOTOS - GRASS Heavy-Use Vehicular Traffic & Parking Areas ::

Below Left: Winter Photo, same area (taken November, 2006):
NOTE: the grass pictured below is the same area, during the grass's winter dormancy phase.
(i) The edges of the grids are slightly visible, protruding above the soil level.
(ii) These edges support the LOAD from vehicular or pedestrian traffic, preventing damage to tree roots and grass roots from vehicles (because the traffic tires never touch the soil).
|
|
|
|
|
|
Note above and left:
The edges of StabiliGrid™ protrude above the level of the infilling of pervious clean gravel.
The weight of the vehicles are supported by the grids - not by the gravel.
This prevents surface compaction of the fill medium - retaining the native infiltration qualities/drainage of the native soil.
Unlike "non-engineered" gravel roads, the natural stone roadways/surfaces using StabiliGrid remain pervious and water-permeable, creating little-or-none incremental Stormwater Runoff.
[I/R = Infiltration Rate, Pass-through Porosity = 82% to 90%]
|
When correctly engineered, the I/R of the surface may be superior to the I/R of the previous, native soil.

Below: Vehicular Surfaces Photos of a grass parking area, also used as an occasional and/or temporary grassy lawn when not needed for overflow parking.
Please note below that these parking stalls ARE the bio-remediation.
Stormwater Runoff is diverted ONTO the parking spaces, which functions as infiltration assets.
When correctly engineered and fully utilized, StabiliGrid ™ may replace - or render superfluous or unnecessary - any or all additional stormwater runoff or nonpoint source pollution structures, such as:
 bio-swales,
 infiltration ponds,
 greenbreaks and green-buffers,
 infiltration trenching,
stormwater runoff diversion or SWR retention/detention structures, and so on ...

presented for the benefit of SUA-MS4 coordinators (small urban areas "municipal separate storm sewer systems" coordinators)
which are affordable + easily engineered (without breaking the bank or requiring exorbitant tax increases - which many small cities' water/sewer rate-payers and customers cannot afford).

INFILTRATION RATES:
You may be asked to provide the I/R of StabiliGrid.
This is commonly and mistakenly requested.
"Infiltration rates" often rely upon the projections of "maximum rainfall events" over a 5-year, 10-year, or 100-year period.
If you are asked how the Product (StabiliGrid) will perform in rate-of-infiltration testing, then the exactly correct - but completely unhelpful - reply would accurately be stated as:
The I/R of StabiliGrid will provide in situ percolation/infiltration in compliance with a standard requiring mitigation levels of: a one million-year rainfall event.
This sounds impressive to the uninformed, but it is NOT relevant to any engineering or certification/permitting process.
The I/R of the materials used in construction is not relevant.
Rather, the I/R of the finished vehicular traffic surface is the only relevant data required.
Determining the I/R: (using StabiliGrid HD™ in this example)
IF: the vehicular traffic surface using StabiliGrid HD™ has a minimum "open" or "straight pass-through" porosity of 82%
THEN: The I/R of the STRUCTURE which is built using StabiliGrid HD™ will have an I/R derived using the following factors
The porosity of the geogrid = 82% Porous for StabiliGrid HD™
The I/R of the subbase + backfill media = to be determined by the local design + local mediums used.
Calculations: To calculate the I/R of the structures you will be building using StabiliGrid HD™, please perform the following calculation:
(Porosity of StabiliGrid HD™) x (I/R of the local medium used) = I/R of the structure built
Using the above formula, with a local medium having an I/R of
(Porosity of StabiliGrid HD™) = 82% = (0.82)
(I/R of the medium) = "x feet of water / second " = (x fps)
IF: You are using a local medium with an I/R of 5fps (five feet of water per second)
THEN: the calculation of the I/R of the STRUCTURE you are building would be...
(0.82) x (5 fps ) = 4.1 fps

NEMO = Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials
Please feel free to refer to the following URL, which has abundant information about the NEMO project and its application.
Nonpoint Source Pollution Education for Municipal Officials Through various projects and funding sources, BRPC is providing education to municipal officials regarding polluted runoff or "nonpoint" source pollution. The program identifies the different types of pollutants associated with different land uses. The goal of the education program is to help municipal officials recognize the environmental impacts of land use planning decisions. NEMO presentations are available to all communities upon request.
MASS / GOV also has plenty of information about NEMO, and the necessity that Municipal Employees discontinue specifying construction standards or materials which create NONPOINT water pollution. (SOURCE = http://www.mass.gov/dep/service/others02.htm)
